Wincanton Wasps v U9s Colts

The Colts' cup campaign started with a solid display against an experienced Wincanton side. Drier weather saw the boys start to be able to break quickly and pass the ball with more confidence. However, although the effort was there from the start the whole first quarter lacked urgency from both teams. Wells looked more accomplished but were hesitant going forward and Wincanton capitalised when a striker turned on the edge of the area and the ball squirmed under Harry in goal.

The second quarter saw a huge improvement as Zak and Jojo got there team going, playing with composure and playing telling passes into the channels for Louis, and in particular Shea, to run on to. It seemed a matter of time before Wells broke through. Wincanton marked in packs and eventually two swift passes between Shea and Louis put Harry through on goal, who took his time before beating the keeper.

The boys' tails were up and an increased work level typified by Shea and Jaden told as a text book break put the home side ahead. The ball fell to Louis on his own goal line and under pressure he looked up and released Harry who pinged a superb ball into the path of the rampaging Caleb who drilled it, with the outside of his foot, past the hapless keeper. Just before half-time Wincanton sent a warning message to Wells with a long-range effort that clipped the top of post and crossbar.

However, it was all Wells thereafter largely due to the dominant display by Zack and JoJo, who didn’t miss a tackle and found their teammates with almost every pass. One of those passes by JoJo, found Louis who fed Harry on the left-hand side of the box and with a trademark toe poke he notched the third for Wells.

Wincanton had a five-minute spell of pressure but Jaden, Shea and Caleb showed how to defend as a team by snuffing out several dangerous breakaways. Caleb in particular deserves credit for his second-half display after some stern words from his coaches at half-time. Well done, Caleb.

The fourth goal came after another tidy move, this time down the left-hand side with Harry eventually completing his hat-trick by dragging the ball back under the feet of Jaden and toe poking home from close range.

A excellent start to the year from the boys.

Goals: Harry (3), Caleb
MoM: Almost every player again deserves great credit with Zack, Shea and Harry’s performances all standing out. However, after being made captain for the block Harry led by example and had a hand in all four goals so he gets the nod.
