WELLS JPL vs East Coker

With their Junior Premier League campaign having come to an end for 2017, Wells JPL invited friendly rivals East Coker to Coxley School for only their second 'home' match of the season.

Coker ended the boys' 12-month, 38-game winning streak back in November 2016 with a gutsy 5-4 win, but Wells set the record straight in the following two encounters with 11-1 and 6-2 victories - the latter in the final of the Champions Cup.

It's fair to say they would provide a stern, physical test, and so it proved in what was a closely fought encounter on a bitterly cold winter's morning. The margin of victory was ultimately convincing for the home side, with Edwin, Noah, Alfie and Rory tormenting the visitors' defence just has they had in the final back in May.

The first period was a scrappy affair, with Wells enjoying the greater share of possession but unable to convert it into chances. With time ticking by, however, they took the lead in superb style. Kosmo won the ball off a Coker attacker in the Wells area, before looking up and playing a neat pass to Alfie on the edge of the area. He sent it wide to Noah, who played it down the line for Rory, who in turn squared it for Edwin to blast into the roof of the net. It was a fantastic counter attacking goal; from a deep defensive position to the back of the net inside a few seconds.

If the first goal was a demonstration of excellent team play, the second was more down to individual quality. Noah - in a wide left position - cut inside a defender and, 20 yards out, sent a terrific curling shot sailing over the keeper and into the far corner of the net (before nonchalantly walking straight back to the halfway line!).

Wells took a 2-0 lead into the half-time break, and switched up through the gears in a third period they dominated. Edwin grabbed his second of the game when he was well positioned on the edge of the area to collect a low cross from Noah before belting a real net-bulger past the keeper. Edwin returned the favour a couple of minutes later when his superb corner found Noah in the area, and he calmly dispatched a side-foot volley into the far corner of the net.

With Wells on top and looking for another, Ben and Kosmo pushed up too far and Corbyn was left stranded 2-on-1. He got a touch to the ball but it rebounded to a Coker attacker and he bundled it home. It was a rare blip in what was an otherwise watchful display from an impressive Wells rearguard.

With Coker pushing for a second, Wells got the fifth goal their superiority deserved. Alfie battled superbly with one of Coker's giant defenders, before threading the ball through to Rory who turned smartly and rifled into the bottom corner.

It was an impressive victory against one of the strongest teams in the Yeovil League, who came to Wells in optimistic mood but left having been comfortably beaten.

Goals: Edwin (2), Noah (2), Rory
Man of the match: Edwin - two goals, two assists and great work rate in what was an impressive display from our pocket dynamo.
