Wells City U9s JPL v PG10

Wells JPL continued their pattern of saving the best till last against a talented academy side from South Wales, but unfortunately it proved to be too little too late on a freezing cold afternoon in Yate.

This Wells team have always been slow starters to the befuddlement of their coaches, but the spirit they consistently display in clawing back deficits late on is to their tremendous credit.

Watched by Rory's cousin, Walsall and former Yeovil Town midfielder Joe Edwards, Wells had the better of the opening exchanges and looked the more likely victors. PG10 twice took the lead only for Wells to claw them back - first Edwin teeing up Rory to finish, then Noah squaring for that man Rory to tap home his second.

The second period was a disaster for the Wells boys. Sloppy defending and uncharacteristically blunt finishing up front gave the Welshmen an opportunity to take a stranglehold on the game - a chance they didn't pass up. Despite Corbyn making a fine debut in goal, making several fine saves that drew applause from both sets of spectators, PG10 had enough quality to convert the several chances that came their way.
But in typical fashion, Wells refused to lay down and bought into their coaches' mantra that every new period starts afresh at 0-0. They completely dominated the third and final quarter, winning it 4-0 and showing more than enough evidence to suggest they easily would have won the match if they had displayed those high standards in the preceding two periods.

Edwin started the comeback when his superb corner curled straight in at the far post, before Alfie showed great skill and strength to turn his marker and fire home into the corner. Wells continued to press and Noah nearly pulled another back when his long-range free kick crashed off the crossbar. Shortly afterwards, an own-goal by PG10 reduced the deficit to two, before a strong run down the right by Rory gave Noah the opportunity to side foot home.

Ben and Kosmo kept the backdoor firmly shut to frustrate the Welshmen, who were relieved to hear the final whistle with Wells pushing for the equaliser.

Goals: Rory (2), Alfie, Edwin, Noah, Own-goal
Man of the match: Corbyn/Edwin - Corbyn pulled off several cracking saves to keep his side in the game, while Edwin was a real powerhouse in midfield, equally effective tracking back as he was going forward.
