Reading FC - Dev Centre v JPL

Another seriously tough Junior Premier League game saw Wells JPL return to Somerset smarting from a narrow defeat to an impressive Reading side. In a physical encounter, Edwin came off limping and Noah earned himself a broken tooth after taking a stray arm in the face.

Wells had the better of the early exchanges as Reading struggled to settle down, but that proved to be a false dawn as the Royals scored three breakaway goals to stun a Wells side that had enjoyed more possession. Noah pulled a goal back with a low shot from a tight angle after good work from debutant Shea to give Wells hope as the first period came to an end.

Reading came out for the second period pressing high and shooting from everywhere (a JPL trait), and soon bagged another couple of goals to leave Wells on the ropes. But the boys refused to throw in the towel, with Rory smashing home a superb volley to pull a goal back before the second period came to a close.

The third and final period saw Wells come close to pulling off an unlikely comeback. Alfie moved into midfield and made an instant impact, conjuring up a superb through-ball that Noah dinked past the keeper to further reduce the arrears. Reading kept coming but found the backdoor firmly shut as Kosmo channelled his inner Bobby Moore to keep them at bay.

Daniel made two very good saves in goal, while Edwin was his usual redoubtable self against street-wise opposition.

Alfie made the contest really interesting when he battled hard to win the ball before smashing it home through the keeper's legs. Shortly afterwards he latched onto a goal-kick from Daniel before firing home into the bottom corner. With victory in sight, Wells switched off at the worst possible moment to allow Reading to break away and nick the goal that effectively ended the contest.

So ultimately Wells' best efforts were in vain, but it's worth remembering the level of opposition the boys are having to contend with every week. Today's opposition, for instance, were handpicked by a professional football club from an entire county. To run such elite opposition so close highlights what a special group of players these boys are.

Goals: Alfie (2), Noah (2), Rory
Man of the match: Alfie/Kosmo - a close call between our two most effective performers today, so they share the honour.
