Somerton v Warriors

The Warriors turned out after their international duties (sorry, half-term!) on a crisp and windy morning against a Somerton side who could unfortunately only field 5 players. With two fresh substitutes to use at all times it was hoped Wells would have the upper hand, which turned out to be the case in a one-sided match.

To give credit to Somerton they defended well in the first quarter, restricting Wells to a few hopeful long shots from Eddie and Isaac and an up-close shot poked wide by Ethan. Isaac netted the only goal of the quarter, latching onto a Somerton throw-in. He nearly assisted in a second from a nice wide run and cross which Ethan couldn't quite connect with.

The second quarter saw Josh and Freddie come on in a defensive switch and Wells went about adding 7 more goals. Alfie had little to do in goal, with Somerton only now having their first shot.

A pickup and pass from Freddie to Isaac saw him score a deflected goal, while Josh had to be on his toes as Somerton tried a quick counter attack but his pressure forced them to shoot wide. Josh then made a lovely long pass to Isaac, who took it under control, ran and confidently placed it in the top corner. Freddie soon added another when reacting quickest to a goalmouth scramble.

Isaac, Freddie and Ethan worked passing triangles well going forward. Ethan scored with a goalkeeper's clearance rebounding of his chest and a Freddie assist saw Isaac score once again. The half was rounded out with two more goals, Ethan passing to Freddie in a quick break and a long throw from Alfie, via Isaac, was forced into the goal by Ethan as he was more determined than the keeper to win the ball.

Somerton's long shots were simple enough for Alfie to gather up and Josh kept an eye on all that came his way, the goal never looking under threat.

Eddie and Dylan returned in the 3rd quarter, with Dylan making an immediate impact after latching onto a pass out wide from Alfie which forced the Somerton keeper to make a brave save. Dylan took the throw which led to Freddie getting the goal he deserved not long after he had just hit the post after weaving skilfully through three defenders.

The Somerton keeper continued with his good work, but had no chance when the cool as a cucumber Alfie took Freddie's pass and placed it expertly in the top corner. Eddie was steadfast in goal with his confident long powerful clearances keeping Somerton at bay, but pulled of a strong save as one of their rare attacks got through.

The final quarter saw Wells top off a fine display of passing, using space well and working as a team with four more goals, great defensive work from Dylan/Josh and goalkeeping from Eddie.

Alfie passed to Ethan who decided not to pass to Isaac in space but managed to dribble around the final defender instead to claim his first ever hat-trick. More triangle passing between Alfie, Ethan and Isaac got Isaac another goal at the third time of asking after the keeper pulled off a double save from him.

The triumphant performance drew to a close with an Ethan pass sending Isaac through for his second hat-trick, before a solo goal from Freddie to seal his fourth.

Goals: Isaac 6, Freddie 4, Ethan 3, Alfie L 1
Martin's man of the match: Josh M - A disciplined defensive performance, even with free-flowing attacking football he kept focused on his job of stopping Somerton's attackers
