Perry Street Youth vs Welld City U9s Colts

The Colts ended their festive season fixtures with a pulsating draw at Perry Street.

With the minimum 7 players and playing 15-minute quarters (some of which were 17!), the boys were certainly tested physically. Perry Street attacked down the considerable slope in the first-half as Wells played counter-attacking football that created two marvellous chances for Daniel, who was denied by the keeper on both occasions. He didn’t let this deter him though as he showed guts to win the ball and lovely vision on three occasions to play in Louis, who was also thwarted.

Against the run of play Perry Street took the lead with a well-struck shot from a tight angle.

The second quarter was much of the same, though Corbyn had to be alert to smother two or three half chances for Perry Street, and Zak demonstrated strength to hold off attackers in tight spaces. Caleb and Jaden were providing the muscle in midfield in what was turning out to be a bruising encounter which Wells eventually made all square with a fine goal finished off by Louis after good work from Zak, Daniel and Caleb.

The half ended with Wells pressing for a second, but when Perry Street broke away captain JoJo was required to make a fine block and interception.

With the slope in their favour, Wells tired a little in the second half but still spent most of it in the opposition half. However, Perry Street took the lead as a speculative shot from distance trickled over the line after Corbyn had made a great effort to save it. Back came Wells, as a flowing move from front to back put Daniel through who was not going to be denied again, tucking the ball into the bottom left corner.

The game continued to ebb and flow as first Corbyn saved a penalty and then the Perry Street goalkeeper blocked efforts from Jaden and Caleb. Against a team with four subs, the boys showed great heart to keep running back and forward as a team and they got their reward as they won the ball high up the pitch and after two quick passes Louis scored his team's third.

The instructions from the sidelines were to keep pushing forward and get a fourth, which perhaps cost a tired group of boys a well deserved victory as the midfield got caught too far forward allowing Perry Street to take advantage of a three-on-two attack to level things up. Your coaches are still learning too!

A very entertaining game which made the long journey for players and parents even more worthwhile. The boys should be very pleased with their effort and improvement in the first half of the season.

Goals: Louis (2), Daniel
Man of the match: Tough call but Louis must have covered every blade of grass on the left-hand side so he gets the nod. He's worked very hard on his weaker left foot and now you could hardly tell the difference as he showed with some fine crosses.
