Martock Rovers vs Wells City U9s Colts

The Colts travelled to Martock looking to improve on last week’s below-par performance against Aller Park.

The boys were unrecognisable from that display as they tore Martock apart time and time again with impressive counter attacks. The way that Jayden, Zack and JoJo started attacks and switched play confused Martock, who hunted in packs. It’s hard to keep passing the ball and being composed when that happens, but Louis deservedly managed to squeeze the ball in from a tight angle to make it 1-0 after a lovely move down the left.

Martock to their credit kept pressing and their talented forward for once got the better of the ‘Great Wall of Coxley’ to fire past a helpless Dan. In a crazy 90 seconds, the wall was breached again as Martock took the lead against the run of play as the whole team switched off.

Martock frustrated Wells for the second quarter until Caleb swung in a corner which Shea cleverly turned onto Harry’s shoulder to level the scores.

Caleb replaced Dan in goal for the second half after a fabulous shift on the right-hand side, where he blended his trademark tricks with some improved passing. Wells came alive as Jaden decided to show what he is capable of. He controlled midfield with intelligent changes of direction, ball winning and pin-point passing to play in Shea and Daniel several times down both flanks.

Despite the pressure, the scores remained level with one quarter left. Up stepped Jaden to glance a header into the bottom corner after hitting both posts minutes before - it was his first goal for the club since he scored at Frome in March 2016 and richly deserved.

Shea, Daniel and Louis were by now terrorising Martock defenders, but it was Harry who put the game to bed after he recreated Rooney’s goal in the week for Everton, scoring from distance after the keeper had come out. The boys were in full flow with some smashing passing creating further chances, one of which Daniel struck powerfully into the bottom corner to claim his 35th ‘career’ goal for Wells.

The comfortable victory represents real progress for the Colts, who suffered a heavy defeat the last time they travelled to Martock almost exactly a year ago. Well done boys!

Goals: Harry (2), Louis, Daniel, Jaden
Man of the match: Jaden - he ran the show in midfield and topped it off with his first goal of the season.
