Wells Ladies record win

Mathew Cooley18 Sep 2011 - 21:02

An emphatic display by Wells led to their first win of the season with an impressive 15 - 1 scoreline.

Character was shown by the ladies team in a ruthless display following last week's heavy defeat.

There are hopeful signs that a settled squad is developing but Wells could only field ten players following late drop outs. The decision to play with only three at the back quickly paid dividends with Wells scoring four in the opening twelve minutes.

Veteran Lawton's defensive skills were sacrificed as she admirably took on the brief to mix it with the home defence and get her shots in opening the scoring with the first of her four goals. Laing-Tate and Dyer were also on target early on.

V Gibson played an essential role in the team as sitting midfielder in the face of the superior numbers of the home team. Her intelligent positioning was an essential factor in Wells domination of the midfield against inexperienced opponents. Ahead of her, youngsters A Gibson and Dyer constantly out-battled their opponents. On the right, Rood will be delighted to rediscover her form, out-thinking her opposite numbers, while Laing-Tate was a constant threat on the left.

The dominance of Wells was such that rookie keeper Allen did not get a single touch in the first half largely due to the contributions of the heroic back line, Butt, captain Hartnett and Walton.

By half-time, Wells led 8-0. Lawton had completed her hat-trick, Laing-Tate had contributed a brace and Dyer, Rood and Gibson had also found the net.

At half-time, the ladies were asked to be ruthless in the second half as they rebuilt confidence following last week's heavy defeat. They did not disappoint. Laing-Tate quickly added two more to break the record for goals scored in a match by a Wells' lady. Ilminster stunned Wells with a great goal to pull one back with an edge of the area screamer as the away team uncharacteristically lost their shape.

Quickly, Wells returned to dominance: Rood completed a hat-trick; midfielders Dyer and A Gibson doubled their personal tallies and Lawton equalled Laing-Tate's individual record with a well taken fourth.

The team can be delighted with the commitment shown in this match and will be particularly buoyed by the manner of their goals, many of which were the result of intelligent wing play. Next week sees the ladies host Broadwalk on Sunday at the Blue School, 2pm kick-off.
