Wells were looking to revenge their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Combe earlier in the season

Wells were looking to revenge their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Combe earlier in the season, and they started brightly with an early effort which was well saved by the Combe keeper only for Dan Catley to shoot wide from the rebound. Wells got the break through on 29 minutes when Darren Maynard was upended in the box. Dan Catley stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 1-0. This gave Wells the impetus and within 5 minutes went 2-0 up when a defence cutting pass from Martyn Sheppard was latched onto by Maynard, who rounded the advancing keeper and slotted home. A minute later, a carbon copy of the previous goal saw Ryan Morris provide the perfect ball and again Maynard finished coolly to get his second and Wells’ third to make it 3-0 at half time.
The second half started in very much the same vein, although Combe did up the tempo to try and get back into the game. On 55 minutes a slide rule ball down the right flank by Catley was tracked by Maynard who squared the ball first time to find Charlie Crook 2 yards out who tapped in to make it 4-0. The Wells defence of Joe Grant, Pete Vowles and Liam Chant never looked troubled. Wells made a couple of changes on 65minutes, Ryan Pledger replacing the industrious Scott Hurley upfront and Jordan Bazley coming on for Dan Catley. Within a minute Pledger had created havoc in the Combe defence and a great through ball by Steve Emery saw Pledger cut into the box from the touchline only to be brought down for a penalty. Mayanrd stepped up to complete his hat trick but the penalty was saved and Maynard got to the rebound but the keeper was equal to it and made a superb save. 2 minutes later Maynard could have made amends when more good work from Emery saw a great cross from the left headed just wide. Wells’ final substitution saw Joe Grant replaced by Dan Barker. Wells saw the game out to win 4-0 and keep up the push for a promotion spot.
