Reserves notch a convincing 11 - 1 win.

Wells made it back to back victories to keep their hopes on track by recording a convincing 11 – 1 victory against a very poor Burnham reserves side

After Saturday’s lacklustre performance recording a 4 – 0 away victory against Nailsea town reserves Wells knew they had to perform as a unit and as individuals a lot better.
The match was all but over within the first 9 minutes as Wells made a rapid start, helped by some poor, unorganised defending, enabling then to race into a 3 - 0 lead.
The first attack on 90 seconds saw Emery cross from the right, and although Catley missed the first chance Ryan Crowther was on hand to poke in from close range.
On 6 minutes good work from Carey and White found Catley with acres of space and after skewing his first attempt had the composure to place the second into the corner
In the 9th minute, having already created 2 more chances to increase the lead, fast interplay between Morris and White enabled the ball to be lifted into the box where Maynard notched the first of his hat-trick with a sublime backward header which wrong footed the keeper.

The downside came on 15 minutes when slack clearances lead to a Burnham corner which when swung into the box their striker was adjudged to be pushed giving the visitors a penalty.
Phipps in the Wells goal saved the initial kick but lack of defensive desire saw a Burnham player first to the rebound to notch what turned out to be their consolation goal.
The rest of the half was one way traffic which saw Emery with a left foot drive, Maynard and a great diving header from White give it at 6 – 1 half time score line

Rather than go for broke the half time team talk consisted of improving ball retention and movement off the ball to enable good habits to be gained in readiness for sterner tests ahead.
Within 10 mintues Wells had added 2 more when Maynard completed his hat-trick with a rasping drive and Crowther seem to score direct from a corner when the ball in sailed through everyone.
White had a goal disallowed for offside which was blemished with a yellow card for dissent and Wells then had the luxury on introducing 3 fresh pairs of legs when Hurley, Crook and Bazely replaced White, Maynard and Catley.

One way traffic soon resumed and Emery, Crowther and Grant fed some superb balls into the box. Morris and Carey continued to pull strings in the middle of the park culminating in one move involving 6 players finding Morris on the edge of the box who dispatched a 20 yard curler into the top corner.
Ashley Crowther and Sheppard stood firm in the Wells rear guard and the only issues for Phipps was a sliced clearance and a one rasping drive from nowhere which rattled the cross bar.
Crowther junior grew in confidence as the game progressed and looked a part of the furniture after Saturday’s debut and looked a seasoned player on 2 surging runs forward.
The second of these ended with a Hurley shot that was followed in by Carey to slide home number 10.
Burnham were then reduced to 9 men in the last 10 minutes as both their striker and then goalkeeper walked off injured.
Hurley had a good finish ruled out for offside and the last piece of action saws a Morris free kick find Crook unmarked in the box to easily plant his header into the back off the net.

Overall the performance did deserve to register a beating of a poor side but Wells need to know there are sterner test ahead in their quest for honours. Saturday 29th sees a massive away trip to Taunton based side Staplegrove who could keep in touch with the leading pack by gaining victory

Assistant manager Maynard spoke after the game “ It’s so true you can only beat what’s put in front of you. Burnham were very poor, but despite a couple of blemishes Wells deservedly scored double figures. Plusses are Ashley Crowthers introduction to senior football and Kieron White and Ryan Crowthers return to form, fitness and confidence. The dressing room is confident and the team have level heads and have achieved so much already this season. However that last 2 months of the season could end in disappointment all round and they must realise with every high comes a low. Just because of this big win they should not build themselves up until what they can achieve is achieved”
