Wells travelled to promotion rivals Staplegrove knowing they couldn't afford to lose if they were to have any hope of promotion.
From the first whistle Wells were straight at Staplegrove, and on 4 minutes a Ryan Crowther free kick was met by captain Dan Catley, whose shot was well saved by the keeper. Wells continued to apply the pressure and on 18 minutes good inter linking play finished with a Darren Maynard shot. 5 minutes later a Catley trade mark free kick was met by Maynard who could only shoot wide. Staplegrove never really troubled the Wells defence of Ben Higgins, Joe Grant and Martyn Sheppard, resulting in long range efforts which were dealt with by Mike Roper in goal.
The continued very much like the 1st with Wells applying pressure. On 60 minutes Wells made their first change, replacing Ryan Crowther with debutant Shane Roche. 5 minutes later a long ranging ball into the box was latched onto by Maynard who stole a march on his defender only to be upended in the box. Catley stepped up and duly despatched the penalty low to the keepers right. Wells then appeared to sit back and invite Staplegrove on and with 10 minutes remaining Staplegrove got the equaliser when a silly free was conceded just outside the box. Slack marking allowed the Grove striker to have a free shot from the deep cross.
Wells still had chances to win the game but couldn't find that all important goal.
Man of the match - Steve Emery
Manager Mark Phipps said after the game "We knew we couldn't afford to lose this game, Staplegrove have 3 games in hand over us and could go level on points, we would have taken a draw at the start of the game but on todays performance it was a case of 2 points dropped, but we're still in the mix and who knows what can happen. The 4 or 5 sides pushing for promotion all have to play each other, so it's all to play for with 8 games to go"
