Runners up spot secured

Wells went into the final league game of the season knowing that just a point would be enough to secure a deserved promotion and were up against lowly placed Burnham Utd at the recreation ground

City started in a hungry manner and immediately put pressure on the away defence with a string of early corners

Ryan Pledger settled any early nerves and on 5 minutes opened the scoring. A perfect pass inside the central defenders found Pledger free and breaking into the box his strike found the bottom right hand corner of the net to put Wells into an early lead, 1-0 up

Soon after a free kick won by striking partner Sammy Andrews on the right edge of the box created the next opportunity. Andrews took the responsibility to take the dead ball kick and his low cross came back off the Burnham keeper and Dan Catley was on hand to fire the rebound into the top of the net to put Wells in control early on in the 8th minute, 2-0 up.

Burnham started to put up some fight as they were thinking they needed the points to stay up, and pushed 3 men up front which for a few minutes caused a reorganisation of the home defence to cope with the additional threat. City maintained there composure and as the game flowed end to end , both Pledger and Charlie Moon came close in adding a third.

With Ross Padfield, Dave Holder and Catley taking control of the midfield Utd failed to make any impression on Steve Coppell's net as the home defence of Sheppard and Bazley stood firm

HT Wells City Reserves 2 - 0 Burnham Utd

The second period started as the first started as City took control of possession though Burnham started to frustrate the home side with some tough tackling, though Holder and Padfield were able to dominate the play and with some direct crosses from James Russell and good work by Moon and Pledger Wells continued to threaten the Utd goal.

A string of substitutions freshened up the play as the Impressive Ollie Bryant was replaced by George Carey on the left side, Dan Poore replaced Holder and Scott Hurley joined Andrews up front for Pledger.

A quick free kick saw City take a 3-0 lead midway through the second half. Catley played it tp Padfield on the edge of the box and his driving run found Hurley on space and the striker fired a low shot past the helpless Utd keeper, 3-0up.

Wells new the game had been won , but winger Moon continued to show his class down both flanks with crosses that were not converted, and he himself wasted an opportunity to make it four, set up by Padfield he was in space inside the box but decided to square when it looked like a shot would have troubled the keeper.

A great win and deserved promotion to the Premier league for a young side with the strength to push on again next season.

Thankyou for the continued support from all those who follow the Reserves week in week out and share in our success.
