First league defeat

Wells reserves return to the league with a tough encounter against Congresbury at the weekend.

From the kick off Wells took the game to Congresbury with some controlled possession, creating the first chance on five minutes with a shot from Charlie Crook which failed to trouble the away teams keeper. Ryan Pledger's showed some of the usual aggression up front to put the opposition's defence under pressure , though catching the referees eye with a couple of early challenges on the away defence.

The unfortunate early substitute of ever present Scott Hurley due to a head clash in the box saw the Introduction of Lucas Kyselica from the bench on 10 minutes. Lucas offered a different dimension to the forward play, with some good movement in the final third and his partnership with Pledger and Crook opened up the Congresbury defence on a few occasions without success.

Well's Captain Dan Catley continued with another solid performance with the impressive Ross Padfield making a welcomed return to the team following his recent Injury to strengthen the Well's midfield breaking up most of the away teams attacks. With Charlie Crook alongside Hall created some half chances for Pledger and the home team. Well's constantly peppered the Congresbury goal with a number of corners from Catley and James Russell but found the Congresbury keeper Bullock tough to break down.

Wells were put under pressure from some constructive play by Congresbury who forced a number of corners, but Keeper Dan Dowling with support from Martin Shepherd, Dan Barker and Lee Lester who recently stepped up from the A team were able to stiff out a number of opportunities created by the away team.

The half finished with a chance missed by the dangerous Pledger. A free kick from Russell sailed over the defence to the back post and Pledger was unable to get the vital touch so both teams went in level at the break

HT 0-0

The second half started in the same vain with the passing and movement by Well's team keeping the opposition quite for , however, Congresbury hit Wells with two second half blows in similar fashion that hit .

Well's lost the ball on the half way line for the first goal when Congresbury breaking quickly down the wing created a shooting opportunity, and as Dowling came out to make the save, a last gasp tackle by Lester appeared to save Wells but the ball fell to the feet of Congresbury attacker Stockhall who fired home into an empty net with Dowling stranded on 53 minutes.

James Russell had an opportunity to level it with free kick won by Kyselica after his maisie run from the right saw him brought down just outside the box. Russell's dead ball failed to trouble the keeper who moved well to collect one of the only clear chances Wells were able to create in the second half.

Wells fell further behind on 62 minutes after having the majority of the ball, Congresbury broke quickly again and left Dowling with no chance as defensive tackle from Barker fell again to the Congesbury attacker who shot from inside the box put the away team 2-0 up.

The home team were to finish the game with ten men as Pledger's tough tackle on the Congresbury centre half saw the referee give him a clear red card and the reserves first sending off of the season.

The Introduction of Dan Poore for Catley late on added a new dimension and Well's continued to press and some neat passing between Poore and Crook into the feet of Zak Hall saw the winger brought down 30 yards from goal. Russell stepped up and his direct free kick went past the helpless Bullock on 87 minutes to give the home side some hope in the dying minutes.

However, Congresbury were able to hold out until the final whistle to break the home teams unbeaten league record, though remain in second place in the league as they travel to the ever impressive Cleeve West Town this coming Saturday.
