Cup disappointment erased with resilient performance

Wells City reserves returned to league action against St George Easton & Gordano, hoping to put a disappointing cup defeat behind them.

The first half was a lively end to end affair that was characterised by strong attacking play from both teams combined with indecisive defending
Wells created the best of the early chances and also drew first blood. In the 8th minute, an offside decision against the home team saw Wells keeper Roper direct a long kick towards the Wells front men. The Easton defence backed off to leave it for their keeper to collect but had completely misjudged the run being made by Darren Maynard. He collected the ball, in open space behind the Easton defence, and deftly lobbed it over the keeper. He collected the ball on the other side and calmly side footed into the open goal
However, the Wells lead was short lived . From the kick off the ball made its way to the home No 10, Tom Bell, and he played a cross box ball to Ian Weston. Weston's shot on goal was palmed down by Roper but the quickest to follow up was Bell himself, and he only had to tap it into the goal- the Wells lead had lasted just over a minute.

The 10th minute saw Maynard leave the game with a knee injury and things seemed to briefly swing in favour of the home team.

The end to end action continued with neither team able to capitalise until the 30th minute saw a Easton No 6, Darren Rowles, play a perfectly weighted ball to Alex Twiggs. He ran to the by-line before crossing to find the head of Ian Weston who had a simple header for the lead.

The response from Wells was immediate and decisive. A returning Ryan Pledger had been a handful for the Easton defence from the first whistle but the goal seemed to fire him on. From the kick off, the ball came to Pledge half way into the Easton half. His decisive forward run scattered the Easton defence and he drove into the box and shot hard and low- giving the Easton keeper no chance. The Easton lead had lasted less than a minute

The goal served to motivate the Wells players and they now piled on the pressure. Pressing again in the 33rd minute, the ball fell to Dan Catley just outside the box. His left foot strike forced the Easton keeper to make a desperate save- tipping the ball just over the bar.

Catley swung in the resulting corner and found the head of Ross Padfield. His powerful header cut through the crowd of players to find the net for a 3-2 lead

Rather than settle back with the lead, Wells continued to press. The 42nd minute saw Pledger once more making trouble for the Easton defence- who managed to depose him of the ball but at the cost of a corner. Catley once more swung over a dangerous corner. The ensuing scramble saw virtually everyone in the Easton box touch the ball which finally found it's way to Ollie Bryant. His clean strike cut through the crowd and found the net to send Wells in 4-2 up at the break.

The second half saw more of the same- the only change being that the Easton defence seemed less vulnerable- although Easton front men Bell and Weston continued to cause trouble.

The second half stalemate was finally broken by Man of the Match, Ryan Pledger in the 61st minute. Picking up the ball just inside the Easton half, he made a powerful run down the wing. A quick one two with Ollie Bryant saw him receive the ball again on the edge of the Easton box. He ran to the byline, losing his marker, before cutting back in and shooting hard and low. The Easton keeper was again left little chance- 5-2 to Wells

The rest of the half continued in similar fashion with Wells looked unlikely to concede again- whilst constantly pressuring the Easton defence.

A great return to winning ways that, due to Middlezoy being in cup action, saw Wells Reserves move to top spot in the league
