Victorious in tough game

Wells Reserves returned to the top of the table, albeit on goal difference following this victory. It was always going to be a tough game, with St George still able to catch Wells in the league if they had won along with their game in hand.
On a very bobbly pitch that was never going to see pretty, passing football, Wells got off to the best of starts taking the lead with 2 minutes on the clock , Ryan Pledger won the ball out wide on the right on the half way line, before turning and beating two challenges and unleashing a shot come cross with the outside of his boot which sailed over the stranded keeper and into the top corner. That settled the Wells nerves as they tried to take hold of the game but St George got an equaliser when Ashley Crowther was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box whilst trying to get the ball under control. The penalty was converted to make it 1-1 after 15 minutes. 3 minutes later Wells were back in the lead when again a defender was penalised for handball. Pledger who was brimming with confidence stepped up to despatch the spot kick. The third came on 29 minutes, a James Russell corner was curled in to the box and everyone missed the ball except Ryan Crowther, who headed home from 3 yards at the far post. Wells thought they had done enough at this point to run away with the game but St George had other ideas and they got a goal back 5 minutes before half time when Wells failed to defend a corner and the No10 poked home from close range. But that wasn’t the end of the action and a minute before half time Wells got their fourth when a trade mark Russell free kick out wide on the left was curled in deep into the box and the defender could do nothing about the deflection as he tried to control the ball and the ball nestled in the top corner.
The second half was a bit of a none event following the goal fest of the first half, with neither side having a noteworthy chance on goal.
