Just not at the races....................

Wells travelled to Burnham on the back of a good run which has elevated to second in the table, with their opponents in the lower reaches of the table. This was always going to be a potential banana skin and with 5 key players missing and the heavy rain had meant the pitch was very heavy under foot with large amounts of sand to soak up the water.
Wells began the game nervously but could have taken the on 6 minutes when Dan Catley had a shot that was deflected but the midfielder picked up the lose ball and squared it back across goal, but there was no-one on hand for the tap in. Then Wells could have gone behind when the Burnham centre back won a challenge and travelled all of 70 yards without a challenge before unleashing a shot which whistled wide of Mike Roper’s post. Wells still had chances to take the lead but lacked that killer instinct. Burnham took the lead 3 minutes before the break when a rash challenge by Ryan Morris on the edge of the box conceded a free kick. Although the kick was pushed on to his post by Roper the striker was first to react and tapped in from 2 yards. There was still time for Wells to get the equaliser but the home keeper was equal to George Carey’s effort, tipping the ball over.
After half time hair drier treatment, Wells shuffled the team moving the energetic Charlie Crook into midfield and the Blues started to take the game by the scruff of the neck, but all too often lacking the final touch with numerous chances going begging. They got back on level terms on 52 minutes, when a cross by Steve Emery was cut back across goal by James Russell and the ball was bundled into the net unconvincingly by Carey. Wells looked comfortable but chances still came and went, and with the introduction of Jordan Bazley and Shane Roche, making his debut, the energy levels went up a notch, but the sucker blow came 10 minutes from time when debutant Lee Lester played a back pass to Roper who under no pressure miskicked his clearance straight to a Burnham player who made no mistake to secure all 3 points.
