Wells went into this game sitting one place below their opponents but having played a game less, knowing a win would mean they jump above them. It was always going to be a close encounter and with the windy conditions and tacky pitch this proved correct.
Wells had a chance as early as the first minute when a Ryan Crowther in swinging corner was cleared off the line by a Gordano defender. The chances were few and far between and it wasn’t until the 17th minute that Charlie Crook unleashed a 30 yard thunderbolt which the Gordano keeper Nick Frost did brilliantly to turn around the post. 8 minutes later, Ryan Crowther brought the best out of Frost again when his cross come shot with the outside of his left foot was somehow tipped onto the bar and cleared to safety. Gordano, although having a share of possession in the midfield they never troubled the Wells backline of Arron Wickham, Dan Barker and Jordan Bazley, with Mike Roper not having to make a notable save.
Wells were forced into their first change at half time, Barker being replaced by Jack Savery. Within a minute of the restart Crook had a chance to break the deadlock but again Frost was Wells’ nemesis, turning the shot around the post. Wells continued to create chances but as has been so often this season, they were unable to turn possession into goals. Dan Catley came the closest to scoring when he turned and lost his marker in the box before lashing his shot which hit the upright and rebounded to safety. 3 minutes later, Kieron White made a defence splitting run before rounding the keeper, but a heavy touched took him away from goal and the striker could only square the ball back across goal but there was no Wells player on hand to tap in. Wells continued to dominate limiting Gordano to a few half chances from set pieces, but still no noteworthy save needed by Roper.
