Performance needs to improve

After last season’s Senior Cup final appearance Wells were hoping to progress to the ¼ final stage, and should have been full of confidence going into this game after beating Middlezoy in the league the week before. But the scoreline was reversed as Wells just didn’t turn up to make this a contest.
On a perfect pitch for playing football Wells looked tired and all too often were found on their heels on not their toes. As early as the 7th minute Middlezoy could have taken the lead when Arron Wickham misjudged a header and Jordan Bazley didn’t anticipate leaving Craig Wright with a one on one with Mike Roper in the Wells goal., but the striker could only drag his shot wide. On 22 minutes Wells had a free kick in the final third and from the breakaway Roper had to be at his best to thwart the advancing striker. Wells had their only noteworthy attempt on goal in the first half when Scott Hurley scored from an acute angle but was adjudged to have been offside.
The second half started brightly for Wells, when with a minute on the clock Kieran Padfield broke through on goal but the young striker indecisive and the keeper smothered the ball with his legs. 10 minutes later Padfield again broke free down the left, skipping two challenges before cutting inside and hitting a shot which was pushed over the bar by the home keeper. This seemed to spark life into Middlezoy and from then on it was one way traffic. Wells seemed unable to cope with the constant pressure and the home team deservedly took the lead on 65 minutes. Wells never really got back into the game and Middlezoy doubled their lead and secured the win on 85 minutes when Wickham tried to play the ball out of defence and his pass was intercepted by the striker and who coolly finished low to Roper’s right. In the end Wells were glad to hear the full time whistle.
After the game, Assistant Manager Barry Maynard said “That was an unacceptable performance, all over the pitch we were second best to everything. Ok, we lost to a better team but the manner in which we conducted ourselves was not good enough. You are not going to win every game but it’s how you put up a fight when you’re losing that sometimes counts. Shrugging your shoulders and looking at the laces on your boots doesn't help anyone. Hopefully the lads will learn from it and we can hope it will only make them stronger”
