8-7 on penalties and into the last 16

Wells City Reserves reached round 4 of the Somerset Senior Cup with a 8-7 win on penalties against a good Pensford side.
This game was always going to be a close encounter, with newly promoted Pensford sitting third in Division 2 East. Wells had the better of the early chances, first Steve Emery had his flicked header cleared off the line then Ryan Crowther seen his header well saved by the Pensford keeper. Pensford thought they had taken the lead on 15 minutes when the striker tapped in on the goal line only to be adjudged offside. The Wells defence of Arron Wickham, Jack Savery and Jordan Bazley were controlling the game at the back which limited the chances for the Pensford frontline. Dan Catley and Scott Hurley both had chances to open the scoring but there attempts weren’t clinical enough. Chances continued to fall to Wells with Ryan Morris also missing the target following a fumble by the keeper. Bazley got himself booked for the second week running with a rash challenge which the referee deemed worthy of a card.
The second half saw Wells press for a goal and a slide rule pass from Catley was latched onto by Hurley, but the striker could only slice the ball into the arms of the advancing keeper. On 60 minutes Wells had undoubtedly the best chance of the game, when a cross into the box by Emery was met by the advancing Catley who blazed the ball over the bar from 3 yards. Wells then introduced Kieron White to the fray, following a long layoff through injury, to try and hold the ball up and create space. Wells thought they’d scored the all-important winner on 87 minutes, when he rifled his shot into the roof of the net, only for the home linesman to flag for offside. Wells still had a chance to get the victory but Whites shot was cleared off the line.
Extra time seen Pensford tiring and Ryan Crowther hit a rasping half volley which hit the base of the post. Both teams resorted to half chances and the game finished 0 – 0. It was then onto the dreaded penalties.
With light fading rapidly, Wells began the penalties, Catley, Ryan Crowther, Wickham all converted, while Morris had his spot kick saved and Emery converted. Pensford’s response was to only miss one of their 5. So to sudden death, Bazley, Poore, White and Savery to make it 8 out of 9. Pensford’s penalty to make it 8 -8 was blazed wide to take Wells through.
Man of the match – Jack Savery
Wells Assistant manager Barry Maynard said after the game “It’s always good to have a cup run as it does wonders for the confidence of the lads. We’ve got through today, albeit on penalties, against a good Pensford side and the positive is the clean sheet. This sets us up nicely for the local derby next week against Glastonbury”
