Made to work hard.........

Wells City Reserves welcomed Langford Rovers 2000 to the Athletic Ground, looking to progress to the 3rd round.
Wells started brightly against a very youthful Langford side and had their first effort on goal in the 5th minute but Scott Hurley could only direct his shot straight at the keeper. Hurley was again in the action on 11 minutes when he crossed but Ryan Pledger shot high and wide. Wells continued to pressure the away side but Langford began to get the ball down and play. Pledger was again in the action when he broke free and his shot come cross was missed by the advancing Kieran Padfield at the far post. On 26 minutes the Langford No7 skipped past 2 challenges but blazed his shot over the bar. Wells were forced into a change a minute before half time when Ryan Morris rolled his ankle and was unable to continue. Ex first team manager Sam Andrews replaced him in the midfield.
Langford started the second half brightly and had several half chances but didn’t really test Mike Roper in the Wells goal. Wells had a great chance to take the lead on 72 minutes when a defence splitting pass by captain Dan Catley was latched on to by the hard working Kieran Padfield but the striker’s lob over the advancing keeper just cleared the cross bar. Wells made their second change on 76 minutes, Pledger replaced by Pete Vowles, this meant a reshuffle in the Wells line-up, but this paid dividends when 4 minutes later Wells took the lead. A Ryan Crowther in swinging corner eluded everyone in the box and Hurley managed to poke the ball home. Langford then threw everything at Wells but the defence of Joe Grant, Dan Barker and Jordan Bazley held firm. The game ended in controversy, when with less than a minute to go, a Langford corner was partially cleared and a shot hit back at goal was handled by Dan Poore. The referee pointed to the spot and was about to deal with Poore but the Wells linesman had flagged for an offside in the first phase of play. Following a long conversation the referee gave a free kick for offside. The official was surrounded by the away team but stuck with his decision. The game was then brought to an end by the ref.
