Wells City 4 - 3 Wincanton
After a poor performance on Saturday Wells welcomed back Manager Sam Andrews and players Mark Randall, Tom Manning and Ryan Crowther from their holidays, Wells changed their formation for this game which seemed to pay off but a late onslaught by Wincanton made for an exciting finish, the game started with both teams playing attacking football chances were had at both ends of the pitch but both defences kept a strong line which limited the attempts to long shots, on 25 mins Wells opened the scoring when a goal kick by Mike Roper was headed on by Jason Loxton to Dan Williams who set up Jamie Howson to pass to Harry Lewis whose shot went into the top of the net for 1-0 Wells, Wincanton had a chance to level the score but a great save by Mike Roper kept the score at 1-0, but a free kick in their own have for the visitors was headed on by the striker and the ball looped over Roper for 1-1 just before the end of the first half.
Wells started strong after the break and on 57 mins scored after great work down the right from Harry Lewis and Jamie Howson who turned his marker to set up Tom Manning whose shot hit the post but the ball came back to Dan Williams who slotted the ball home 2-1 Wells, Wells then added another when a ball over the top by Charlie Crook was hit home by Dan Williams 3-1 Wells goal timed at 59 mins, another through ball by Harry Lewis for Jamie Howson to run onto but was brought down in the box penalty Wells, Dan Williams stepped up and converted to make it 4-1 and his 6 mins hatrick on 63 mins, this should have finished the game but Wincanton battled hard and a corner from the left was headed back across goal by the centre back for the striker to head home 4-2 Wells, the visitors were having most of the ball and were rewarded with another goal with good play down the left and the forward slotting home 4-3 Wells, Wells then replaced Gavin Eyre, Jamie Howson and Dan Williams with Ryan Crowther, Billy Manning and Toby Cole with the latter coming close to to extendig the score but a great save by the visiting keeper kept Wincanton in the game, but the referee brought the game to an end and a relieved Wells side gained a valuable 3 points.
Goalkeeping coach Ivan Andrews said after the game it is so fustrating on the sideline when you know you have a good side that can play football but they just need to understand that sometimes you have to play ugly football and put the ball in the crowd and regroup rather than get into trouble trying to play the ball out from the back, at 4-1 you close the game out but to let a team back in like we did isnt good enough we have alot to learn, but on the plus side we scored some great goals and in parts played some good football.
