Single goal seals win

City produced a sterling rearguard performance to overcome Bishop Sutton, and took the points thanks to a late strike from substitute Steve Murray. Although this was a highly entertaining game in which both sides played some excellent football, chances at either end were far and few between as both defensive units were in dominant form.
The first half was played at a good tempo with both sides taking advantage of a good playing surface to get the ball down on the deck and pass the ball around. The interchange and movement was of a high quality, but for every passing movement, there was defensive work of equal quality which meant that both keepers had a relatively quiet afternoon.
The closest either side came to scoring during the first period was when Sutton were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, and man of the match and Sutton Skipper, Pete Shappard sent a glorious curling attempt goal bound which Owen Dunn in the Wells goal did exceptionally well to tip onto the crossbar.
The second half saw the Lakesiders dominate for long periods but the Wells defence held firm with Ben Robertson, Kyle McErlain and Jamie Gowers in miserly form.
Leading goal scorer, Steve Murray was introduced on the hour, to add a bit of sharpness up top, whilst manager Tim Moxey made a double substation on 70 minutes, bringing Liam Black and Steve Sokol into the fray in place of the tiring Ben Higgins and Ross McErlain who had both put in a decent shift for their side.
With 10 minutes remaining, the decisive moment arrived as Murray beat the offside trap and coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper.
City held firm and collected their first points against Sutton since returning to the Western League.
Wells moved up the table with this victory, and are well placed with games in hand on the teams immediately above them
