Wells advance to Quarter Finals of Somerset Cup

A delighted Wells City manager Mark Read found it difficult to control his emotions as he saw Wells City edge past Welton Rovers to reach the quarter-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup.

Having already beaten Evo-Stik League Southern side and cup holders Taunton Town in the previous round, City were underdogs again but by a much smaller margin against a side bottom of the division above.

As in the previous round, an outstanding defensive display helped see Wells through and Read is now split on who he would like to play next.

"The game was a bit mucky, but what pleased me most was how we dug in as a side," he said.

"We rode our luck at times, but in the last month or so, we have become a side that is much harder to break down and then we are much quicker on the break and looking dangerous.

"We probably gave Welton too much respect in the opening 20 minutes but overall we deserved to win, the team performance was excellent.

"It would be nice to draw one of the big sides once again but on the other side of the coin it would be great to draw Street, a local derby for everyone to savour."

Welton dominated the opening exchanges and would feel they deserved to be ahead at the interval as an Adam Conradi effort came back off the crossbar and another effort was cleared off the line.

However, City were the better side in the second half, with Jake Brown dangerous on the break and James Batchelor productive in midfield.

The game was settled in the final minute when a long Will Justin goal kick caused confusion in the home defence and Batchelor's shot was parried, only for a defender to knock the rebound into his own net.
