A team crash out of Charity Cup.

Wessex FC VS Wells City A team, Second round, Charity CUP. 2/4/16
Managers Ryan Morris and Andy Goswell was left frustrated after their side crashed out on penalties to a well organised, experienced Wessex side, despite dominating for large parts of the encounter. Wells who themselves were not at their free flowing best, still managed to create several golden opportunities to put the tie to bed well within the 90 minutes, and continued their dominance into extra time, but lapses at the back allowed the home site to score 3, giving Wells a mountain to climb.
The home side took the lead with 5 minutes on the clock as a needless free kick was awarded on the edge of the box. The result was the home side’s midfielder curling an unstoppable effort into the top corner. What unused was 30 minutes of good attacking play, some poor finishing and some excellent goal keeping kept the score at one nil to the home side. Mike Barnett (twice), Plunkett, M Davidson, Harry Davidson and Bailey Waterhouse all missing chances in this period where Wells really should’ve got themselves level. Instead it was the home side who got the 2nd goal of the afternoon as a set piece was met back post by the striker, whose movement bamboozled Tom Tibbs, to volley past the hapless Bradley Phillips. Amazingly it could have been worse for the visitors as Phillips had to produce 2 decent saves to keep the score down. 2-0 HT.
The second half began with Wells pushing hard to get themselves back into the tie. As the home side began to tire, Wells found themselves with more space to operate in, and on 65 minutes reduce the deficit as Luke Plunkett raced through one on one with the keeper. He coolly rolled the ball passed the keeper, playing to the whistle as the lineman’s had his flag up for offside, which the referee correctly overruled. Wells went for the kill and created more and more chances in the belief that they could take the game into extra time. Substitute Ed Jackson had a glorious chance to draw the visitor’s level, but his lob fell onto the roof of the net and Arron Wickham hit the underside of the cross bar with an excellent free kick. With the clock ticking down, Wells was awarded a life line as the home side’s central defender was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area. Wickham made no mistake, sending the keeper the wrong way from the resulting penalty. FT 2-2.
Start of extra time, Wells found themselves behind once again as the home side worked the ball down their left hand side, which the winger was allowed to go past two defenders to pull back to an unmarked centre forward, which he had the easy job of taping in from 3 yards out. Wells once again had to dig deep to get themselves level. Again as the 1st 90 minutes saw several players fluff their lines in front of goal. Plunkett, Jackson, Davidson and Waterhouse all again had chances to score, with the best falling to Plunkett, whose effort was saved excellently from 5 yards out with a minute left on the clock. However the from the resulting corner, Wells created one more opening and it was Wickham who found himself unmarked 3 yards out, which he excellently flicked his side level. With the celebration’s continuing, the linesman for some reason raised his flag in a desperate attempted to disallow the goal. The referee once again over ruled his assistant and the game went into penalties. Wessex converted their 1st 4 penalties, with Phillips unlucky not to keep one of them out, Plunkett missed Wells’ 1st penalty. M Davidson, Wickham and H Davidson converted theirs which left Wessex needing to score their 5th to win the game. Phillips was sent the wrong way, giving the home tie the reward of a home tie against Radstock A in the next round.
‘Once again, we have lost a game which we should never have.’ Morris stated after the game.
‘We were nowhere near our best today, the players know that, and yet we had more than enough to get the result we wanted. No blame is on any individual, it’s just as a team we sometimes lack the cutting edge in the final third. Conceding the 1st goal seems to pile on the pressure, which we failed to cope with it. These players must realise soon that there is no need to panic, we are good enough to cope with any situation’
‘it is not the 1st time we’ve lost a game like this, so it we need to learn from this quickly in order for these young players to be successful. It’s odd as I know how good we are, we are more than capable of winning any game. Last week being the prime example as we put 8 past a much better team in High Littleton in the last round.’
‘The focus is solely on finishing 2nd in the league, which is in our hands. Win the final 3 games and we will do it. However it does depend on which Wells A team turns up, this one today or the one who is capable of putting their chances away, while being solid at the back.’
Wells A play host to Mells and Vobster at the blue school this weekend, KO 2.00pm.
