Wells miss chance to cement second spot with a disappointing display...

A disappointing afternoon meant that Wells A missed the opportunity to cement their league position as they went down 3-1 to a very good, well organised Westfield outfit. The visitors were allowed to dominate large periods of the encounter as Wells were punished for not being at their best.

A slow start to the game from the home side meant Westfield could take control early on. Playing to their strengths meant midfield runners could play off the big centre forward who put him self about. The warning signs were their as a couple of set pieces caused all sorts of problems, and it was one of these set pieces which got Westfield a deserved lead. A poorly cleared corner fell to a midfielder who laid it off to an on rushing forward who lobbed the helpless Bradley Phillips.

The majority of the half it was more of the same, with the visitors in control. Wells continued to give it away and seemed to not work as hard as their opponents. It could have been two nil as good play down the Westfield left meant a low cross was met by the striker who unexplainably saw his effort sale over the bar from 4 yards out. 5 minutes before half time, wells started to play. A couple of near misses came and went with Matt Davidson having the best chance as he failed to get on the end of a Harry Davdison cross. M Davdison then went even closer as the keeper had to produce an excellent save to deny the youngster's free kick. HT 0-1.

After some stern words, the home side came out with real purpose and desire to get themselves back into the game. Both Davdison's got on the ball a lot more and raced to support Luke Plunkett who was isolated in the 1st half. The midfield began to take control too with Nick Beales in particular orchestrating the fight back. On 65 minutes the home side was gifted a life line. As the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on M Davidson. Arron Wickham made no mistake from the spot and from this point onwards, Wells look the most likely team to go on and win the game. However it wasn't to be as the home side gave their visitors their second goal as a comedy of errors meant that keeper Phillips could only tip a tame effort on to the post to trickle over the line. Wells were not out of it at this point as substitute Mike Barnett had two chances but failed to connect properly on both occasions.

The final nail in the coffin came with 5 minutes to go, as another defensive mix up allowed the ever dangerous number 10 raced through and slotting the ball under Phillips. Game over. FT 1-3.

Post match, a visibly disappointed Ryan Morris stated that 'against one of the best teams in the league, we failed to turn up and got what we deserved.'

'All season long, I've spoken about how good we are and our league position suggests we are a very good team. But that 1st half display really didn't do us any justice at all. The most frustrating thing is we had it in us to beat these, as our good spells in the game proves. Not only that but our recent performances meant we should've have confident enough to go out and beat anyone. But I guess we were punished for our own compliancy. No matter what level you play at, if you don't match the work rate of your opponents you'd normally lose the game.'

'Finishing 2nd is our aim and before this game it was in our hands. We are now relying on others for us to achieve this now, which isn't ideal. All we can do watch the results come in and focus on our final game of the season.'

The A teams final game of the season is a trip to Clutton reserves on the 30th of April.
