Trip to Wembley

A Wells City U8 team travelled to the capital on Saturday to watch the England game at Wembley and play their first ever match outside of the south-west.

They were invited to take on local side AFC Hayes before heading over to the national stadium, and jumped at the opportunity to test themselves against a side from the capital.

Hayes play in the Harrow Youth Football League, and are an official partner club to Queen’s Park Rangers. They were sure to provide a stern test of City U8’s credentials in unfamiliar surroundings in the London Borough of Hillingdon, eight miles away from Wembley Stadium.

Wells took the game to Hayes from the start and raced into a comfortable lead within the first few minutes. Hayes mounted a comeback late in the first quarter to reduce the deficit to just two goals, but Wells stepped up a gear and established a dominant lead against their hosts. The final margin of victory reflected the visitors’ superiority, though the home side were committed throughout and kept going until the last whistle.

Wells played some superb football in a match played in the right spirit that was a credit to both teams.

Hayes are planning a trip to Somerset later in the season for a re-match, and will be warmly welcomed by the U8s.
