Frome Town 1 - Wells City 2

MATCH REPORT: Frome Town 1 Wells City 2

Wells City are fast becoming the giant killers of the Somerset Premier Cup this season as not only have they knocked out the holders of the competition Taunton Town, they have now added the scalp of Frome Town who are 55 places and play three divisions above them.

This was no fluke and the score line reflects the difference between the two sides.

Wells City are still very much in the promotion mix in division one of the Western League and their confidence should get a huge lift following this outstanding midweek display.

The opening period of the game was a bit messy with numerous passes going astray and several chances being created that brought poor finishes.

Frome should have gone in front on 15 minutes when a deep Josh Jefferies cross was flapped at by Will Justin, but no one Frome striker had read the script as not one player was left loitering at the far post for what would have been a simple tap in.

Wells themselves wasted an opportunity midway through the period as James Batchelor was given acres of space through the right channel, but Batchelor hesitated almost on the penalty spot and it gave Jon Davies the chance to through down the challenge and clear the ball to safety, it was an opportunity missed.

The game began to open up more as the half progressed and from another dangerous deep cross from Jefferies to the far post, Zayne Alime volleyed well wide from just 6 yards out.

The home side almost took the lead on the stroke of half time as Ricky Hulbert cut inside Mike Grist, but his shot that was on target from 18 yards was cleared off the line Jamie Price.

The second half had a lot more purposeful action and it was not hard to see why Frome are not scoring goals as Steve Hulbert wasted another opportunity dragging an effort wide when well placed.

Natan Rendell then wasted an opportunity to put Wells in front, but from the resulting corner, goalkeeper Darren Chitty dropped the ball almost on the goal line and it was Mike Grist who forced the ball home from close range to give Wells City the lead on 57 minutes.

Wells were in the driving seat and Lee Pitman almost doubled the visitors advantage with a screamer that flew inches over the crossbar from 20 yards out.

Wells City eventually doubled their advantage with a goal of high quality when Scott Saunders who had been the best midfielder on show, sent a superb cross field ball to the unmarked James Batchelor who had made space down the left channel and he fired a superb left foot shot beyond Chitty to give his side a 2-0 lead.

Within 90 seconds Frome Town had reduced the arrears with a soft goal as a Marcus Mapstone free kick from out wide on the right, was dropped by Will Justin and Ricky Hulbert bundled the ball over the line.

The tempo favoured the home side in the final 10 minutes as they looked to take the game into extra time, but there seemed little likelihood that Wells would surrender their advantage and they stuck to their task of defending really well and in reality Wells City ran out comfortable winners.

Manager Mark Read was over the moon and he said after the game: "I said when I came to the club, promotion was always going to be our first option and we are still very much in the thick of gaining promotion at the first attempt.

"To have a cup run like this is doing us no harm, we feel a place like Wells has been at the wrong end of the table for too long, the place is buzzing and we feel as a team we can go a lot further".

"Beating both Taunton and now Frome tells you how far we have come, but there are bigger obstacles to climb yet, but we all have the passion to take this club a lot further".

For the very first time the Mid Somerset area boasts two teams in the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup as Wells City now join local rivals Street in the counties biggest cup competition.
