Alex Petheram: Statement following EGM

Alex Petheram

The last few weeks have been frustrating for everyone across the club!

We have had two first team home games called off due to rain and a waterlogged pitch, and after such a stop start winter it feels like we have barely played at all across the club, from the Ladies, Reserves, A-team to the U6's!

That is why I wanted to share something meaningful with you. Something that goes beyond the next fixture.

On 19 January 2026, we held an EGM at the clubhouse. Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend and be part of that discussion. The vote was unanimous.

Wells City Football Club will move into a new legal structure that protects the club long term, strengthens governance, and allows us to move forward with projects that have previously been blocked.

This is not change for the sake of it. It is about protection, security, and building something that lasts.

For too long, the club has been held back by uncertainty around our lease and by not having a structure that meets modern football and funding requirements. That is now changing.

The club will become a company limited by guarantee. There are no shareholders. No profit is paid out. Every member has one vote. The club remains owned by the people who care about it.

Why this matters

Once the lease position is finalised, this structure allows us to:

  • Protect the club’s long term home
  • Apply for stadium and welfare funding
  • Upgrade the floodlights to LED
  • Deliver the changing room project
  • Reduce running costs
  • Improve facilities for players, officials, youth and the Ladies
  • Meet welfare standards for 2026 and beyond

This is not a promise. This is a process we are now finally able to complete.

For me personally, this has been a long road. At times exhausting. Often frustrating. But absolutely worth it.

This club is built on volunteers, players, families, supporters, and people who give their time every week for no reward other than pride. You deserve a club that is stable, protected, and capable of moving forward. That is what this decision delivers.

We are still the same Wells City. Same badge. Same colours. Same people. Same heart. Now we also have a platform to build from.

Thank you for backing the club. Thank you for backing its future.
