Derby win

Mid-Somerset Division 1 leaders Wells City A were comfortable winners when they visited Shepton Mallet on Saturday and already look likely to take some catching if they are to be prevented from winning the title.

The hosts tried to have a go at their rampant visitors but Wells were tight defensively, with the experienced Arron Wickham at sweeper and Pete Vowles at centre-half in particularly good form.

The opening goal came after nine minutes when a cross-cum-shot from Tom Hawkins beat stand-in keeper Paul Napper at his near post.

Shepton were further embarrassed when Rocky Nolan headed a Wickham free-kick into his own net after 30 minutes.

When the home side did make a rare breakthrough in the Wells defence, keeper Liam Williams looked suspect but Shepton never made him pay for any of his fumbles.

Adam Lester had a couple of chances for the hosts in the second period but Wells still dominated and should have furthered their advantage with Ashley Birch, Mike Barnett, Matt Sparkes-Brown and Wickham all going close.

Shepton's best move of the match came late on when substitutes Liam Hodges and Dan D'Arcy combined, the former putting through a well-timed pass which D'Arcy could not quite finish.
