Wells A taught a lesson in Junior Cup.

Wells A were dealt a harsh lesson in how to play at this level against a very good Bridgwater sports side, who won this competition last season.

A somewhat depleted squad, with 9 regulars missing, and 5 younger members of the squad rested by manager Morris, meant that there was another new look for the A team going into this encounter, but before the game there was a belief that this squad of players could travel there and cause an upset. Especially as the squad of players were all keen to prove their worth for future involvement. The contest started relatively even, with Jordan Strode Walton especially looking lively from the off. However the much more experienced opponents stamped their authority on the game with scoring 3 very quick goals in the final 20 minutes of the half.
The second half began with Wells still in the changing rooms, as Bridgwater scored another 4 goals to compile a miserable afternoon on the wells A team, which left managers Goswell and Barlow stunned. What they witnessed was a side that seemed to have given up and wanted the contest to be over. Failure to work hard and get the basic right meant that the A team were there for the taking and were lucky in the end to come away with only being defeated by 7.

After the game a surprised Morris (who missed the game) stated that ‘I am in complete shock at the performance of the lads, as what I have heard some of them played well below what I know they can.’
‘I am also surprised to hear that it seemed to be a bunch of individuals rather than a team working together to get a result. A lot of the lads that travelled know how to play, and all know what is expected of them once they put that blue shirt on. So to roll over and allow Bridgwater to fill their boots has made for a disappointing afternoon.’
‘I might sound harsh, but I know that this group of players fell well below what they can deliver. It’s a lesson learnt and we move on. It’s a dent to the confidence of this young side, but with the league fixtures coming thick and fast, we must learn quickly and get a much needed 1st win of the season under our belts starting with the next fixture.’

Stand in manager Goswell added ‘I could not believe the second half display. It seemed like after a few tough challenges, we rolled over. Normally reliable players went missing and that cannot be accepted, especially as the majority of the starting 11 are looking to pushing into the reserve side by the end of the season.’
‘We are so much better than that.’

This weekend Wells A travel to newly promoted Temple Cloud looking to get back to winning ways. KO 14.00
