Point gained or 2 dropped?

After last week’s improved performance, Wells A took the short trip to play one of the strongest teams in the division in Westfield reserves who found themselves in good form, winning 9-0 last time out.

Wells knew that they had to be at their best in order to secure victory and the opening minutes of the game meant for a cagey affair. Wells to their credit made it extremely difficult for the home side to gain any rhyme and were reduced to a couple of long range efforts, not troubling Bradley Phillips at all. In fact it was the A team who looked more likely to break the deadlock, as Will Rivers and Ryan Crowther went close but was stopped by the home team keeper. Crowther also had a much easier chance to break the deadlock, as he beat the advancing keeper to the long ball into the box, however the ball just wouldn’t fall for the wells forward as he tried desperately to get his effort goal wards. This and the pressure applied by the covering defender meant that Crowther toe poked the ball wide past the far post. HT 0-0.

The second began as much the 1st finished, with Wells on top. Crowther again had two glorious efforts but could find the target with either, and Daniel Catley also went close, but he could not force the ball over the line from close range. Catley who used the game for much needed match fitness before returning to the reserve side also send a free kick high and wide, which he should have done a lot better with. This was the last chance for Wells as the game entered the final 10 minutes. In this period, the visitors had to dig deep with some rugged defending at times. Some last ditch defending from firstly Aidan Ellis and Catley with two excellent goal line clearances as well as Bradley Phillips pulling off 2 decent saves to ensure that the visitors came away with a point they least deserved.
FT 0-0.

‘If I was offered a point before the game, I would have taken it.’ Morris said after. ‘However as we dominated large periods of the game and had the best chances overall, I now feel slightly frustrated. It is definitely two points dropped.’
‘All the best chances seemed to fall to Ryan this afternoon and you can’t help but wonder if he had taken his 1st opportunity, he would have gone on to score 3 or 4. However as each chance came and went, you could see his confidence drop. We will always encourage players to forget moments of misfortune and Ryan is well on his way back to full fitness after a difficult year out. With this, the goals will come for him and he’ll be flying again in no time.’
‘It must be said however that we seemed to have sorted out our defensive problems, with some excellent performances. Bailey Waterhouse in particular has improved massively this year already which is pleasing’
‘What we need to do now is build on the solid foundation, at times we didn’t play when we should have. We have gone a long way to restore some of the confidence this side desperately needs. But we are not where I think we should be, yet...’

Next week is another away trip, this time to Radstock A. KO 14.00.
