After a disappointing start to the season, where Wells were beaten by a very efficient Welton Arsenal side, Ryan Morris and his men were keen to get back to winning ways after such an impressive pre-season. With a number of personnel and tactical changes, Wells started the game on the front foot early. Playing a free flowing style with a solid foundation at the back, it was apparent that this side learned a lot from the performance from the previous week.
The 1st half was all one way traffic with chances falling to Nick Beales, Kieron White, Ashley Crowther, Tyler Cornish and Matt Davidson, but none were able to convert. The breakthrough came just after half time, as White raced on to a through ball to slid the ball past the on rushing goal keeper. Soon after Wells was awarded a penalty when again White, who was a constant problem for Meadow all afternoon, was upended, with Arron Wickham converting the spot kick convincingly in to the top corner.
Once that went in, it seemed the mentality of the team changed and instead kicking on and getting a few more goals, Wells allowed Meadow to get a foot hold in the game, and for the last 30 minutes, were arguably the better side. They’re pressure was awarded when Wickham brought down the on rushing centre forward in the penalty area, which the Meadow keeper coolly dispatched the resulting penalty. A double blow as Wickham was given his marching orders for the challenge.
With Meadow committing men forward, they were always vulnerable at the back, and dispute being down to 10 men, Wells broke down the right, with White once again bearing down on goal. Unselfishly he squared it to Substitute Ross Long to convert. 3-1 the final score.
After the game, Wells management team of Morris and Goswell were left satisfied with the win, but are fully aware that in order to have a successful season the A team must capitalise when they are on top.
MOM Nick Beales.
