but promotion push still on.....

Wells took to the field for the second time in 5 days, hoping to continue the good run of results, and also use this a warm up for the upcoming Somerset Senior Cup semi-final.
Wells got out of the blocks lightning quick and within a minute took the lead when Jordan Bazley hit a rasping volley which hit the underside of the Nailsea bar and the rebound was bundled in by Darren Maynard at the second attempt. Within 4 minutes Wells doubled their lead when a loose ball fell to Billy Manning who finished coolly with a low drive. Wells continued to create openings but the all-important final ball rarely reached its intended target. Nailsea rarely troubled the Wells goal. With 35 minutes on the clock, Wells got their third when Steve Emery finished following a knock down from a corner.
Although Wells held a 3-0 lead at half time, the performance was well below par.
The second half started promisingly, with the Nailsea custodian making two superb saves in quick succession. Wells were then forced into changes after Manning appeared to badly twist his ankle. George Carey replaced him and Liam Chant replaced Dan Barker at the back. Nailsea started to get some rhythm going and had several long range attempts which didn’t really trouble Wells. On 65 minutes Nailsea got a goal back when a lofted free kick into the Wells box eluded the defence and was met by a Nailsea striker who headed home leaving Mark Phipps in the Wells goal no chance. A minute later Nailsea doubled their goal tally and put themselves back in the mix when defensive indecisiveness allowed Nailsea to finish over the advancing Phipps. Wells gained control again and Steve Emery got his second and Wells’ fourth on 75 minutes with a low drive which took a deflection to wrong foot the keeper. Wells were still unable to kill the game off and with a minute left on the clock, Nailsea got their third when a deep corner was inadvertently headed into his own net by Emery. Wells managed to see out the final minute and scrape a victory that keeps them on track for a potential promotion push.
Man of the Match – Steve Emery
The Reserves turn their attention to the cup next week when Burnham United visit the Athletic Ground with a place in the Somerset Senior Cup Final up for grabs. Kick off 2.30pm
After the game Julian Coppell, Assistant Manager said “This was one of our worst performances this season, it was disjointed but there was an element of rustiness due to lack of games and maybe the lads had one eye on next weeks’ cup semi-final, but ultimately they were all playing for their places in that squad and not one of them has cemented a place based on that performance”
