Below par performance but still a victory

Wells went into this game brimming with confidence following their Senior Cup semi-final win on Saturday, but turned in one of their worst performances of the season.
Playing against a Churchill side languishing in the bottom three of the table, on paper Wells really should have had a comfortable win, instead Churchill dug deep and really made Wells earn the victory.
From the start Wells looked jaded and disjointed and the all important final ball just wasn't good enough. There was no real cut chances for either side until on 35 minutes a defensive mistake allowed the Churchill striker to finish past the advancing Roper.
At half time the team had a stern talking too but it appeared to make no difference in the early exchanges of the second half. Wells then made a double change replacing Ryan Pledger and Jordan Bazley with Darren Maynard and Steve Emery. Almost immediately Maynard began to inject some urgency in the team and on 60 minutes a ball dropped at the feet of Martyn Sheppard on the edge of the box and he sliced a speculative shot which eluded the Churchill keeper and went in off the post. This still didn't appear to spur Wells on and 5 minutes later a deep Churchill corner wasn't cleared and an attempted clearance by Sheppard appeared to hit the back of another Wells defender and drop in the net. This sparked the side into life and on 75 minutes Darren Maynard scored his first and Wells' second equaliser of the evening. With play now all one way Maynard got his second
of the night and his 20th of the season to wrap up the points for Wells.
