After last Saturday’s poor showing, Wells Reserves gained their first points of the season with a resounding score line

After last Saturday’s poor showing, Wells Reserves gained their first points of the season with a resounding score line, albeit against poor opposition.
The game was over as a contest in the first 30 minutes as Wells ran into a 4 – 0 lead without Wells custodian Alex Henderson having touched the ball.

The first half began brightly for Wells with momentum gained at every touch. Within 5 minutes a quick break saw an Olly Bryant cross headed in by an opposition defender to open the scoring.
On 12 minutes good work from George Mitchell released Ross Padfield on the left who squared to Olly Edwards to firmly place a rasping drive in to the net.
Wells then created chances at will and Darren Maynard should have done better on 2 occasions before redeeming himself by outpacing the home defence and cross for Edwards to nod in his second and Wells’ third on 20 minutes. The game then got scrappy at times and although in a dominant lead Wells did not totally get on top of their poorer opponents. On the half hour mark, a Ryan Morris through ball found Maynard who fed Padfield to find Edwards, who claimed his hatrick with aplomb. Olly Bryant, Pete Vowles, Dan Barker and Andy Goswell had relatively little to do defensively and the game petered out to half time.
A talking to at half time was hoped to see Wells take more control in the second half but it was their opponents who started brightly. Henderson had to be on his toes once or twice and then touched a free kick onto the bar for the save of the game. With passes going astray too often and everything going at 100 miles an hour 2 or 3 more chances were created but not taken.
Steve Emery and Fabio Ramos were then introduced for Dan Cately and Olly Edwards with Scott Hurley coming on for Vowles a stage later.
Emery soon got to grips with this game and twisted and turned on one nice run to find Maynard who again put wide when well placed. On the hour mark the best move of the match which saw 7 or 8 great passes ended when sweeper Barker followed his initial surge into the box and claimed number 5 with a clinical strike.
Emery then got onto the scoresheet on 70 minutes when, after stern work from Ramos and Mitchell, he was fed on the edge of the box where he controlled, shifted to his left and sank a well placed 20 yard drive into the corner of the net.
The scoreline remained the same until the full time whistle. Despite their clear dominance a lack of early season fitness could be a reason for not pressing home a bigger score.
Deserved man of the match was Edwards for his first half hat-trick.
