Season begins with defeat

After a good pre-season much was expected of the Wells team with an opening home fixture against opponents from North Somerset. Unfortunately things didn't go to plan as it was the away team who took an early lead via a penalty after what was deemed to be a poor challenge from Ollie Edwards. Wells failed to get any sort of momentum through the first half and went into the break a goal down.

In the 2nd period Wells re-shuffled the pack, chances were now starting to be created especially with the introduction of George Mitchell down the left side. However, with Wells pushing forward, a counter attack with poor defensive decisions allowed Uphill to score their second. This kick started Wells into action and Edwards re-deemed himself with a well taken lob over the keeper to give Wells their first goal. Just as the home side were starting to dominate proceedings a second counter attack again caught out the home side with the Uphill forward despatching a fierce shot into the corner of the net giving Alex Henderson no chance in the Wells goal. Although frustrated the home side were still trying to get back into the game, good work from Darren Maynard wide on the right forced the away team to play a ball across the path of the in-coming Edwards who slotted home from the edge of the area. 2 - 3 down Wells were going all out to try and get a point. With only a few minutes remaining substitute Pete Vowles was shown a straight Red for bringing down the opposing striker in what was alleged to be a goal scoring opportunity. Reduced to ten men Wells had nothing left to give and finished as losers on the opening day of the season.
