Reserves lose on away trip

Wells made the long trip to Minehead hoping to bounce back from recent disappointments and pick up some points from the sixth away trip on the bounce.

After a decent start, the under strength Wells team took control of the play and started to create a number of opportunities.

On five minutes , the ball fell to the feet of Charlie Moon and his snap shot on the turn hit the Minehead keeper in the chest for a comfortable save. George Carey and Moon combined well as the new front line partnership created some smart interchanges and had the home defence worried with pace and creativeness.

Matty Rivers , making an appearance from the A team on the right side was a bright addition to the away side, becoming involved in some positive support from with Lee Lester at right back, and Rivers had the home keeper pedaling backwards with a speculative shot/cross from 40 yards which just cleared the bar.

Charlie Crook and Dan Poore worked well in the centre of midfield with the absence of Ross Padfield and Crook's ability to change defence into attack opened up the home defence, as a smart pass through to Carey looked like he had set up an opening, though Carey was running onto the ball was unable to make enough contact to trouble the keeper.

Wells continued to push forward, and with a string of corners it appeared a chance would be taken, though clear shots on goal were few and far between. Minehead rarely ventured into the Wells half, only action for Steve Coppell in the Wells goal was to collect a handful of crosses and corners which the big man did comfortably.

The half came to a close a stalemate with Wells hoping to keep a clean sheet to keep Minehead at arms length in the promotion hunt.

HT 0-0

Wells were slow out of the traps in the second half and the home side took control of the play putting Wells defence of Martyn Sheppard, Sam Andrews , Ben Higgins and Lester under constant pressure. Using the strong wind from behind , Minehead continued to make Wells defence turn and Coppell's goal came under threat from a number of deep cross's, Coppell stood his ground and the defence dealt with clearing there lines.

The Introduction of Dan Catley just after the break for Rivers who had made a positive contribution, saw Wells' reserves play down the right continue and releasing Moon and Carey on a couple of occasions.

Against the run of play Wells went behind to the only goal of the game, a deep cross that wasn't blocked at source found the home striker in space as the away defence were opened up trying to play offside for the first time and from 10 yards he found the bottom right hand corner of the net with Coppell left helpless.

Minehead had a second breath following the goal and Wells were lucky to stay in the game, as a sharply taken free kick came back off the Wells bar only to be cleared by James Russell from the on coming attack. Russell and Andrews combined on the left to play Moon in behind the home defence whose skills were unable to pull the necessary goal back

Overall it was a solid away performance that deserved a point, however, just one moment when Wells switched off proved costly and with a handful of games remaining to pick up the required points for promotion, its In the reserves hands to take the second spot this season.
