Derby draw

Wells Reserves made the short trip to Street Res on Saturday in search of a vital win to kick start the promotion push.

In a competitive start both teams struggled to take control of the game with little chance being created. Wells playing down the hill in the first half managed to force a number of corners, but the deliveries from Dan Catley and James Russell into a crowded box on most occasions failed to trouble the home keeper.

In an uneventful 45 minutes, Street managed to take the lead against the run of play and yet again as in recent weeks Wells had to come from behind. A hopeful cross wasn't cleared as the Wells players stood still , Street target man Toby Davey reacted and delivered a toe poke shot from 18 yards which left Steve Coppell in the Wells goal helpless.

As halftime approached both teams had some half chances, Wells relied on the use of the long ball and continued hard work in Midfield from Ross Padfield opened up the home defence on a couple of occasions to free Scott Hurley and George Carey, though the away strikers were unable to trouble the score sheet. Street Res never looked like creating any further chances as the Wells defence superbly marshaled by Ben Higgins and Martyn Sheppard and Coppell in goal never looked like coming under further threat.

HT Street Res 1 - 0 Wells Reserves

The second half started with more positive Intent from Well's as the half time talk seem to drive the team forward. A change up front with the Introduction of forward Ryan Pledger joining Hurley, saw the ball began to be held up and allow the midfield quartet of Padfield, Catley, Sam Andrews and Carey to join in the play further up the field. Wells put Street under continued pressure with some positive attacking play, especially on the right side as Jordan Bazley and Carey opened up the home defence on a number of occasions as they pushed for the equaliser.

On 60 minutes Wells Res deservedly drew level. A free kick won on the edge of the box by Pledger. James Russell struck the dead ball against the home wall and the deflection fell nicely to the feet of Hurley who from 6 yards fired Wells level, 1-1.

Wells continued to push for the winner in the remaining half hour and Bazley was unlucky to head over from close range after following up a Catley free kick that came back of the home keeper. Carey was then put through one on one from a ball by Andrews and finished his effort well only to be flagged off side and for it to be chalked off. Although both teams tried to win the game in the final minutes, the game ended in a draw which leaves Wells 5 points clear of the chasing pack as Wells Res came away from Street with a point when 3 would have been deserved.

Reserves now face a further three away games in 6 days that could shape the season. Starting with a local visit to Glastonbury on Wednesday night, 7pm KO for the re-arranged fixture before trips to Winscombe and Burnham over the Bank Holiday weekend.

We appreciate your continued support and a huge thank you to all the club sponsors.
