2 Hurley goals secure win

Wells entered this game knowing it was a 6 pointer and nothing but a win would keep them in touch with the leading pack in the league. Middlezoy came to the Athletic Ground as the leagues leading scorers, so Wells knew they had to be at their best if they were to take all the points.
It wasn’t a great start for Wells and they were indebted to keeper Mike Roper twice in the first 5 minutes. His first save and 2 minutes was low save down to his right from a poked shot from a goalmouth scramble. The second, a minute later was a superb one handed save which he somehow pushed on to the post from a goal bound header. Wells weathered the early pressure and began to put the Middlezoy backline under pressure but that all important opening goal didn’t come form either side, and with Wells playing into a very strong wind the defence of Arron Wickham, Jordan Baley and Jack Savery protected the Wells goal but they were glad to get to half time 0-0.
Within a minute of the restart Wells took the lead when Scott Hurley won a ball in the middle of midfield before laying a ball into the path of Ryan Crowther, Hurley continued his run and Crowther picked him out with a diagonal ball and the striker hit a low drive past the advancing keeper. 4 minutes later Wells doubled the lead when James Russell latched onto a ball down the left wing and taking the ball in his stride drilled a cross to the near post where Hurley managed to get in front of his marker and plant his header into the roof of the net. This took the wind out of Middlezoy’s sails and they rarely troubled the Wells defence . Hurley should have claimed his hat-trick on 65 minutes when a deep free kick by Russell saw the keeper in no mans land but Hurley could only flick his backward header over the bar. Wells continued to create chances and looked particularly dangerous from set pieces, and they resorted the Middlezoy attack to long range efforts with Roper not having to make a notable save in the second half.
Man of the match – Mike Roper

Assistant Manager Barry Maynard said after the game “the first half we weren’t at our best and if it hadn’t been for Roper’s heroics the game could have been a lot different. But the second half we were a different side and the two early goals settled us down. We lock horns again this Saturday as we travel to Middlezoy in the Senior Cup. Let’s hope the lads are up for it again and the result goes our way”
