Pressure still on.................

Wells went into this game sitting top of the league, and hoping to win and keep pressure on the leading teams. They were dealt a blow early on Saturday when keeper Mike Roper had to pull out through injury, and with no available keeper manager Mark Phipps had to dust off his gloves to make an appearance at the age of 46.
In blustery conditions it was Wells that got off to a flyer when after just 4 minutes James Russell played a slide rule pass down the left wing which George Carey latched onto before providing an inch perfect cross, which Ashley Crowther met with his head from 6 yards leaving the Burnham keeper no chance to give the lead and the ideal start. It was all one way for next 15 minutes with Burnham unable to get hold of the ball although Wells were unable to increase their lead. Burnham had their first chance on 20 minutes but Phipps was equal to the shot but the referee pulled play back for handball. Wells then seemed to let their superiority slip and they began to concede silly and needless free kicks allowing Burnham to get back in the game. Darren Maynard had a good chance to double the lead on 35 minutes but the keeper thwarted his effort. A minute before half time Burnham thought they had got the equaliser when a deep free kick into the box was dropped by Phipps under a heavy challenge from a Burnham striker which the referee deemed a foul and awarded a free kick to Wells.
The second half was very much in the same vein with Wells not capitalising on possession with efforts going begging from Carey and Maynard. It was becoming more and more frustrating with even the Wells supporters getting on the players backs. This turned in an instant when James Russell won a tackle out wide on the right before cutting inside onto his left foot before unleashing a 30yard screamer which gave the keeper no chance. This settled the nerves but once again Wells let Burnham dictate passages of play with silly free kicks being conceded in and around the home box. With 5 minutes remaining Russell made a tired challenge which the referee blew for and from the resulting free kick Burnham got a goal back, a floated free kick to the back post was met by a free head which bounced off the left hand post and a Burnham player was quickest to react. It was a nervy last 5 minutes but Wells saw it out to win and claim the 3 points which takes them 3 points clear at the top.
