A Dogged display against Premier division opponents earned the City side to progress to the next stage of this County Cup Competition

A Dogged display against Premier division opponents earned the City side to progress to the next stage of this County Cup Competition. A Darren Maynard brace was the icing on the cake to an excellent team performance on this day.

As expected the Home side took the game by the scruff of the neck in the early stages forcing a number of corners to which the Wells defence marshalled by Sheppard coped admirably. On the odd occasion when they did get into good positions, they found keeper Mike Roper in good form and was on hand to smother any effort heading goal bound. Through-out the half the home side had the majority of possession but it was Wells that took the lead midway through. Good interplay of passing through the midfield, ended with Maynard picking the ball up on the left side of the Fry Club penalty area, as he cut inside, he smashed a shot into the top corner of the goal giving the keeper no chance. This spurred the City side on and were unlucky not to increase their lead as the home keeper went to clear his line, he kicked the ball straight to the energetic Scott Hurley who reacted quickly by returning the ball over the keepers head. The ball was heading for the goal but the keeper managed to get back just in time and push the ball over the top of his goal. Unfortunately Wells could not keep the lead and succumbed eventually to the Home side's ever mounting pressure. Eager to make a tackle in the penalty area, the quick thinking Forward turned his marker and sent a ball across the goal into the path of a oncoming player who tapped home from close range.

The Second half started in the same fashion as the premier divisions possession was dominating the game. However as before they could not break down the defensive display of the Wells team. Their only true efforts came from distance which really didn't threaten at all. As the game was looking like it was going to extra time Wells brought on the lively Fabio Ramos in exchange for the hardworking Pledger. This gave Wells a new dimension playing the ball on the ground rather than in the air. It was again through good interplay, that the ball was passed into the path of Maynard who out stripped two closing defenders to lift the ball over the advancing keeper into the net.

"An excellent team performance by all" was the comment from the manager Mark Phipps who was delighted with attitude of all involved. "It was very pleasing to show that we are capable of competing with teams from a higher division and hopefully performances like this will give the lads confidence to handle what is thrown at them in our division" he said.
