MATCH REPORT: Wells City 1 Cheddar 1
The midweek derby between Wells City and Cheddar was largely forgettable as both sides failed to play any sort of football on a bumpy pitch.
Cheddar looked the better side during the opening exchanges and Sam Jones was denied early on by two brilliant blocks from Olly Bryant.
Cheddar's early pressure saw them take the lead on 16 minutes, when Matt Connick got behind the Wells defence to guide the ball past Ben Dancey.
Wells were then dealt a huge blow as their keeper Dancey had a recurrance of a knee problem and he was replaced between the posts by Matt Crowther, who had never kept in a competitive game before.
Billy Manning tested Crowther straight away but the stand-in keeper did well to push the ball to safety.
Crowther, however, almost gifted Cheddar a second goal as he dropped the ball at the feet of Connick, who put the ball into the empty net, but the goal was ruled out for an infringement.
Just before the interval, Wells went close when a Keiran White shot on the turn was pushed to safety by Keiran Webster.
City started much the better of the two sides in the second half and, although their football was never pretty, they did at least up the tempo of a poor game.
It was Cheddar who went closest, however, as a Crowther clearance fell straight to Sam Jones. His first touch was good and his second excellent as he crashed a powerhouse of a shot against the Wells crossbar from 25 yards.
A rare Alex Brandrick mistake allowed Wells to get back on level terms as Dan Williams picked up the loose ball, fed Toby Cole and his cross was hooked home by Keiran White.
Wells could have stolen the game late on as Cole dragged an effort wide when well placed from a brilliant Jamie Howson through ball.
Ross McErlain saw an effort from distance tipped over the crossbar by Webster and in the final minute Howson was denied by a combination of Webster and Wayne Scorse.
The result was a fair one, but the quality was below what might have been expected.
