Wells win in convincing fashion

Wells City's surge towards promotion in the Western League First Division remains very much on track as they made it nine wins from their last 11 games with a comprehensive victory over Corsham Town at home.

City moved up to third with the win and are now level on points with second-placed Ashton and Backwell, but they still have five games in hand over their rivals.

It could have been a different story for the hosts against Corsham, though, as they almost went behind in the opening 15 seconds when Liam Bryant headed a cross from the right over the crossbar.

City's response was immediate and they went ahead on five minutes when a Lee Pitman corner was headed home brilliantly by the towering Nathan Rendell.

Corsham then got themselves back on level terms with a fine Liam Bryant close range effort, but it did not take long for the home side to regain their advantage.

A Jake Brown break into the Corsham penalty area ended when the striker was kicked from behind and it was Brown who converted the perfect spot kick, before City extended their advantage just before the break when James Batchelor challenged Corsham goalkeeper Mark Billingsley and the ball found the back of the net.

The second-half was a tighter affair, although Corsham almost cut the deficit with a terrific 40-yard effort from full back Alex Hammond that crashed against the Wells upright, with Will Justin unable to get anywhere near.

The home side did add a deserved fourth goal in time added on when Batchelor lifted the ball over a static Corsham defence for Aaron Allen to sprint onto and fire an effort wide of Billingsley.
