Wells City 2 - Chard Town 1

Wells City are no longer dark horses in the Toolstation League Division 1 title race as they made it seven wins on the trot by beating Chard Town on Tuesday night.

Chard are on the verge of the promotion race themselves but City's victory was well deserved and could easily have been by a bigger margin.

Although Mark Read's side are fourth, they have several games in hand and it looks likely to be between them and Chipping Sodbury for the title.

Chard did mix it with Wells in the opening exchanges and it became obvious that the home side needed to be on top of their game to brush aside well-organised opponents. Wells always looked stronger in midfield, with Nathan Truckle again the lynchpin.

The opening goal came midway through the first half when Jake Brown was fouled and Lee Pitman curled the free-kick expertly around the wall and into the bottom corner for his 21st goal of the season.

The hosts dominated the rest of the half and could so easily have scored two or three more, with only the drying pitch and uneven bounce denying Brown.

Wells flew out of the blocks at the start of the second half and doubled their advantage on 55 minutes when Pitman and Leon Brittain combined superbly to set up the onrushing Brown, who hammered the ball into the far corner.

From that moment, Wells were rarely put under pressure despite the visitors having their fair share of possession.

The only disappointment came in the final minute when Luke Woodland hammered a superb 20-yard effort into the back of the Wells net to halve the gap.

Man of the match: Leon Brittain.

Wells City face a run of three home games in less than a week – Roman Glass St George on Saturday, Hengrove Athletic on Tuesday and Cheddar on Good Friday.
