Grist scores late winner for Wells City

Wells City continued their good form but had to wait until stoppage time to grab all three points against Westbury United.

The opening half saw both sides going head to head as City's leading goal-scorer Lee Pitman went close on three occasions and Shav Allen also went close for the visitors.

It was the home side who took the lead midway through the period when Jake Brown skipped past two tackles before sending a fine right-foot effort past Charlie Haydon in the Westbury goal.

There was controversy on the stroke of half-time when a burst from Josh Ferguson saw the striker blatantly hauled down by Scott Saunders, but before referee Shane Nash had time to blow his whistle for the free-kick to be taken, Levi Wood sent a low shot into the corner of the City net.

The goal was allowed to stand to the disbelief of both sets of players and Wells City, who had dominated for long periods, went into the half-time break on level terms.

The game had fewer chances in the second half as both sides appeared to cancel each other out, but it was the home side who went closest to scoring with an Olly Bryant effort that beat Heydon but not the base of the upright.

The goal that Wells had threatened came four minutes into time added on when a cross from Saunders was headed home by Mike Grist to give Wells City three more valuable points.
