Wellington 1 - Wells City 3

MATCH REPORT: Wellington 1 Wells City 3

Promotion remains a strong possibility for Wells City as they scored two second-half goals to beat Wellington away and keep in the chase at the top end of the Western League First Division.

City could have built up a substantial lead in the opening 45 minutes had all their opportunities been taken, but Wellington remained in the contest with the scores level at the break.

The visitors had the best opportunity to go in front on 20 minutes when James Batchelor got in behind the Wellington defence only to see his shot shave the outside of a post.

Batchelor then should have given City the lead on 27 minutes when he was kicked by a defender inside the penalty area, but his spot-kick was scuffed and easily saved by Wellington's keeper.

He redeemed himself on the half-hour mark, though, by sending a super effort from 25 yards into the top corner to give City the lead, before the hosts equalised against the run of play in the 40th minute through Jack Bryant's volley.

Wellington started the second half strongly and Bryant almost added a second with a 20-yard effort that went inches wide, but it was City who gained the upper hand when Lee Pitman followed up his initial parried shot to slam home the rebound.

The hosts could have equalised on 88 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, after Mike Grist was adjudged to have fouled Bryant, but Ian Bellinger's spot-kick was saved by Will Justin.

It proved to be a vital save as moments later Wells put the game to bed when Scott Saunders' free-kick was headed home by Leon Brittain to secure a 3-1 victory.

Manager Mark Read said: "Fortunately a few results have gone our way since the break, with several of the clubs around us not missing too many games with the bad weather.

"It can be said that those clubs have got the points, which is true and we will probably have a tough finish with all those games to catch up.

"Fortunately we do have strength in depth and it will be a case of using all of our squad players in the coming weeks, they will all be in the thick of the action at some stage."
