Wells City back up to 4th

Wells City returned to fourth spot in Toolstation League Division 1 with a narrow win over Wellington on Tuesday night.

City needed to show a marked improvement following Saturday's dismal defeat at Portishead and they did just that.

Mark Read's side made a good start and almost took an early lead as superb link-up play between Lee Pitman, Nathan Rendell and James Batchelor, saw the latter miss out by striking a post from eight yards.

That effort lifted the whole side as Wells looked a far slicker outfit and leading scorer Pitman deservedly gave the home side the lead midway through the period.

City doubled their advantage on 34 minutes when a Pitman cross got the deftest of flicks from Scott Saunders, his effort nestling low into the far corner of the Wellington net.

The visitors got themselves more into the game in the second half and reduced the arrears with a scrappy goal as the home side failed to clear and the ball fell to Jack Bryant, who prodded home from close range.

Wells could have added a third in the final minute when Jake Brown got in behind the Wellington defence but his shot did not match his approach work and the ball was cleared.

It was a much-improved Wells performance but if they are to maintain a promotion push, they need to kill teams off more effectively.
