4 first half goals sees Wells cruise to victory

Saturday saw Wells host fellow top of the table club Warminster. The game would see 6 goals but Wells' dominance in the first half would prove them worthy of all 3 points.

Wells shaped up slightly differently then their last away game at Bishop Sutton, but remained with the same starting 11. Lee Pitman took up a more central attacking role, which allowed Leon Britton to move back into his more favoured position of central midfield. It was also good to see Adam Thomas return to the bench after a short spell out with an ankle problem. This change though in the Wells City attack, proved pivotal as Pitman worked tirelessly to win the ball back for the home side whilst becoming very influential in most of the Wells build up play.

The first goal came from a free kick in the wide right position. The ball was curled into the box by Pitman and was met by Wells central defender Mike Grist to head home a 1-0 lead after the first 5 minutes. The referee had already booked 3 Warminster players by this point for late tackles on the City attack. The Wells fans didn't need to wait to long for the second. Jake Brown broke into the box from the left, and then squared the ball to Pitman who slotted home from 10 yards to make it 2-0 with 15 minutes played.

Wells at this point were in complete control of the game, and all of Warminster's chances were coming from poor passes or clearances whilst in the final third.

In the 35th minute, Wells strung 10 passes together through the heart of the Warminster midfield and defence. The ball found its way to the left foot of James Batchelor, who steadied himself before curling the ball home into the top left corner to make it 3-0. 3 minutes before half time, Wells and Pitman made it 4 from the penalty spot, after Purnell was brought down from behind just inside the box.

Wells still commanded the play throughout most of the second half, and good opportunities were missed by Pitman, Padfield and Brown. Warminster's hard work to try and get back into the game was rewarded with 2 late goals. The first was a penalty, after Jamie Price was deemed to have taken the player before the ball inside the box, and the second was and excellent lob from just inside the box by Warminster midfielder, Tom Walsh.

Wells City assistant manager, John Allen, was very pleased with the first half performance. "We have been working hard in training to play through our midfield and not resort to long balls forward. Retaining position and keeping our shape has been a valuable lesson learned after the Portishead game, we must now continue to build on this run of victories".

Wells City are back in action in 2 weeks time when they travel away to Roman Glass St. George on the 26th September.
