BUT STRUGGLE TO BREAK DOWN BOTTOM SIDE SUTTON

BISHOP SUTTON 1 WELLS CITY 2

WELLS STRUGGLE TO BREAK DOWN BOTTOM SIDE SUTTON

Wells went back up to second in the table on goal difference after a close 2-1 victory on Saturday against bottom side Bishop Sutton.

Wells arrived at Lakeview expecting to find a side short on confidence, but found with a few new players, that they were a lot stronger then their league position suggests. They were a young and determined side and if they continue with his newfound attitude, they will finish higher than they are now. Wells only change was to play Dan Dowling in goal for his first league game for Wells.

It was a battling first half with few chances for both sides. Wells had the best of the opportunities but the home side’s determination kept the game goalless until ten minutes from half time. Jake Brown had a good call for a penalty turned down, but a few minutes later he was able to dribble his way to the goal line and cross for Lee Pitman to score. Shortly afterwards Leon Britton missed a chance to double Wells' total but missed when one on one with only the Sutton keeper to beat.

The second half continued with Wells trying to play good football but the final passes were going astray. Midway through the half, Wells won a free kick on the left and Lee Pitman’s cross was met well by Britton who headed it home.

Wells seemed to be coasting until the final 5 minutes from time when a free kick was needlessly given away on the edge of the Wells area. The free kick was well taken by the Bishops Sutton substitute who hit it into the top left hand corner, giving Dan Dowling no chance. Memories of the midweek game at Keynsham gave Wells a nervous last few minutes but the team had learnt from Tuesday, and played out the remaining moments for the win.

Wells have a tough game on Saturday when they face unbeaten Warminster Town at Rowdens Road
