Chipping Sodbury Town 0 - Wells City 2

Chipping Sodbury Town 0, Wells City 2

Wells City got their season off to a winning start by defeating Toolstation League newcomers Chipping Sodbury Town.

The club have been busy during pre-season, appointing John Allen as assistant manager to support boss Mark Read.

With 12 new players having been added to the squad, the Blues are targeting promotion to the Premier Division.

Saturday's league opener started at a high tempo as the newly promoted side dominated spells of the first half with some excellent play through Dave Sims in the centre of midfield.

Both teams had good chances, with the best falling to Sodbury on the half-hour as the ball was cleared off the line by City man of the match Mike Grist.

The heat started to play its part, and the final few minutes of the half became stretched. Opportunities presented themselves to both teams but the keepers were not called into action as Grist and Sam Gerrish made great blocks.

In the second half, Wells started to dictate the pace of the game and the breakthrough finally came in the 65th minute from Lee Pitman, who collected the ball on the left before a mazy run took him past two players and he curled his shot home from 20 yards.

After another period of pressure from Chipping Sodbury and the introduction of Jack Dempsey to freshen up their midfield, City waited for another opportunity to counter-attack.

It came in the 80th minute as Lucas Kyselica, who had replaced Adam Holcombe, intercepted a stray pass and broke down the right. As the keeper came out to close down the angle, Kyselica slid the ball to his left and James Batchelor slotted the ball into an empty net.

Ross Padfield and Jake Brown returned to the squad for City's game at Chard Town last night, while a home game against Calne Town awaits on Saturday.
